Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: Searching for Better Fish

Posted on April 27, 2011

Lots of rain and storms should mean a successful striper spawn this year for Lake Texoma. Most of our larger fish are now up river delivering their eggs to ensure a healthy and stable population of fish. The fishing this past week has continued to improve but with the late spawn it is not as good as it has been in years past this time of year. Little fish are almost guaranteed now and you can catch as many as you want all day long. Catching better fish, since there are limited numbers in the main lake now, takes a little more skill and a lot more luck.

I’ve been spending most of the time on my trips trying to put nice fish in the box. Some days it works out for me and some days I have to settle for the little fish. They seem to be feeding on a daily basis but they are not always in the same spot and some days I just don’t find them before the bite is over which has been around 9:00-10:00 the past couple of days after that, it’s time to settle for the small fish. All of my fish are being caught on bait in 25-35 ft. of water either drifting or on anchor. Cohoes and slabs are working great for the smaller fish which can be found in shallower water under the birds. The shad are now spawning which means that a topwater bite could be starting up in the coming days.

Friday and Saturday were mostly small fish but a lot of them. Sunday was great with lots of nice fish. Monday was back to small fish and Tuesday we got in the nice fish again.

Fishing will really be turning on the next week or so as the fish return from their spawning run. May and June are traditionally 2 of the best months of the year and I don’t expect anything less this year. Fishing during the week will always be better than the weekends as there is far less competition for the fish. Micah is now licensed and ready to fish and is available for any last minute bookings. You can check out his profile on the Stripers Inc website, www.stripersinc.com under the “Meet Our Guides” section. Please be aware that I am the only guide available for online booking  so if it shows that I’m booked, give me a call at (903)815-1609 and I will get you set up with Mark or Micah.
