Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: Sat Jan 30

Posted on January 31, 2010

The last couple of weeks have been slow for me. I haven’t been able to bring home a good box of fish since the last artic blast blew through, with humbling totals of 10 fish or less on the few trips that have decided to fish. Thankfully on Saturday, with temperatures not rising above freezing, I was blessed with some feeding fish to give me a decent box of fish.

Saturday was a cold one. With temperatures in the 20’s all day it made everything a challenge. My locks and dock lines were froze solid and had to be pried free. My bait was barely hanging in there but after changing the water it thankfully perked right up in the warmer lake water. I had 3 guys which were repeat customers and had full confidence that I would put them on some fish. Possibly even a little more confidence than I had, with the way the fishing had been, but I knew that fish would eventually start biting for me sooner or later. It was as good of a day as any with a change in the weather. We headed out around noon. I start working my way west, making stops along the way to try the jig pattern drifting across points, ditches, and humps and throwing glow flukes. We fished for about an hour and a half with out even getting a bite so I decide to change things up a bit and throw anchor. Anchors haven’t been working for me the last couple of weeks and the only way I’ve been able to bring in fish is drifting with lures but that wasn’t working at all and what I saw on the graph gave me confidence to toss out the anchor and try it. We were in 45-50 ft. on a ledge. Everyone had a bait rod down 15-20 pulls in the rod holder and holding a lure rod with the glow flukes down 15-20 pulls also. Using flukes on anchor is almost exactly like jig fishing for crappie. You drop the lure in the strike zone and leave it there giving it a twitch every now and then or slowly raise and drop the lure with your rod tip. Sometimes they like it best when it is just sitting perfectly still. It helps to have bait down when you do this to bring the fish to your lures. We sat there five minutes when a bait rod went down. Grateful that we had our first fish in the box, I had a renewed confidence. A few minutes later I caught one on a fluke, then 2 bait rods went down. We were catching fish! We kept 18 fish before the day ended, which was a good day. We caught more fish on bait but we were getting more bites on flukes and most of our big fish came off of the flukes.  Our biggest for the day went 11 lbs.

With the days getting longer the fishing will only get better from here. February has had some great fishing in the past; hopefully this year will not be any different. I will be at the Dallas Boat Show from Feb 5-14 at Dallas Market Hall. It’s located at 2200 Stemmons Freeway, Dallas TX. Stop by and say “Hello,” if you’re in the area. I am now starting my Boat Show special and from now through February 14 you can book your trip for anytime in 2010 for $100/person (3 person minimum). Now is the time to book your spring and summer trips. You can book your trip online at www.stripersinc.com or you can call me anytime at (903)815-1609 and I’ll get you set up for a great time on the lake.
