Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: When Do You Want to Fish?

Posted on June 5, 2022

I am often asked when is the best time of the year to fish, well, it depends, how do you want to catch them? Do you want to focus on big fish? Do you want to bring a limit of fish in the boat in 30 minutes? Do you want to catch them using topwaters, swim baits, or slabs? How about on the fly? We catch fish limits of fish year round and any day of the year can be incredible or it can be slow, you just never know what to expect. The winter we focus on big fish casting swim baits and this lasts until May when we switch to using live bait and topwaters to fill the coolers. Fishing live bait is best during May and June, most days during this time of year you can catch a 6 person limit of 60 fish limit in about 30 minutes, of course I won't bring you back in that quick, we can catch and release when we near the limit so we can stay out the full 4 hours. The fish will hit as fast as you can get a bait down to them and we catch them as fast as I can take fish off the hook and bait out another shad. This is how fish has been most every day we have been out here recently and should continue like this until the end of June. By then all of the baby shad fry will have hatch out and this will trigger our best topwater action of the year. If you like fly fishing, which has become my favorite method to fish, then this is the time to come. During the months of July and most of August, you will find surfacing action most of the day in different areas all over the lake in schools that are acres in size at times. Topwater action continues through September and October, by then the lake is cooling down and the bigger fish move into the shallows where we can target them with big topwater plugs. This is one of the best times to catch a big fish on topwater or on the fly. By November and December, its all about chasing the birds and using slabs and swimbaits.

Anytime of the year is a great time to fish, but the absolute best time hands down to come out and catch fish is during the week, especially during the summer when there are more people on the water. The added fishing pressure during the weekends can make for some slow fishing at times so if you are looking for the best time, take off and come during a week day.

Right now we are in the middle of bait season and this will last until the first of July, its easy to catch fish and a great time to bring out the children to let them get into some fast action catching fish one after the other. The last few days we have been fishing in shallower water, 16-25 ft using live bait fishing on anchor to catch them, though I expect them to move into deep water around 60-80ft. any day now as the water continues to warm up.
