Texoma Topwater fishing + Exciting News!

Posted on September 3, 2009

I just got back from Colorado and it looks like I’ve brought the cool mountain air back with me. Lake Texoma water temperature is 81 and falling. The fishing is fantastic and will keep getting better with the falling water temperatures. The fish are running shallow trying to get into the cooler water and the topwater fishing is HOT!

I didn’t have a trip this morning but I had to have some sort of evidence to tell everyone how good the fishing is so I decided to take my dad out. I woke up early and caught bait and we hit the water at first light throwing topwaters right after a thunder head had passed. The first spot we stopped at we got into some great topwater action! My dad caught a double (2 fish on the same lure) on his third cast! We were catching fish every cast until another boat showed up. We let him have that spot and left to go scout out some other areas. We tried 4 other places without a strike before we got back into them. The action was even better than the first spot! My dad apparently had luck on his side today because he did something that I’ve never seen anyone do, he hook a second double! We were throwing fish in the box 3 at a time and there were just 2 of us! The fish are incredibly aggressive right now. We had our limit by 8:00 with all of our overs and the rest were all good box fish. I didn’t even get a chance to open up the bait tank. Looks like I’m going to have to take my friends out tomorrow evening so all of that good bait doesn’t go to waste :)

As for Colorado, needless to say it was incredible! The Rockies are absolutely breathtaking! It was just my girlfriend, Megan, and I that went. We went white water rafting down the Royal Gorge, rented an Artic Cat and took it to the top of Mt. Antero at 14,269 ft, went hoarse back riding, swam in the hot springs, and of course, went fishing every chance we got. The trout fishing was great! We fished on the headwaters of the Arkansas in Browns Canyon. I was going to try my luck at fly fishing but never got around to it. I was doing too good with my ultra light spin cast and repala to try something different. I like to catch fish, how they get hooked is irrelevant to me. I was proud of Megan, she put on a pair of waders for the first time and caught her first trout within first 30 minutes. We caught around 25 trout the whole time and only kept 4 to cook for supper one evening.

The last morning was my best and Megan’s worst. She decided to do her makeup and fix her hair because we had been taking pictures with the fish we caught and she wanted to look “pretty”. I was letting her fish in front of me and I was going behind her casting in the same spots using the same lure and catching fish while she wasn’t. I had caught 12 and she had still yet to catch a fish. I told her it was because she got fixed up but she didn’t think that was too funny at this point. By now the sun was starting to cast light over the river which means that the trout bite is just about over for the morning. I decided to quit and sit down on a rock and watch her fish so I wouldn’t frustrate her anymore by catching another fish. She was bound and determined to catch a fish and wouldn’t give up. As I watched her wading through the river in her bulky waders, trying so hard to catch a fish I realized that I had truly found my sole mate. I watched her fish another hour before the hunger got the best of her and she gave up. She wanted to get a picture before we went in since she had gone to all of the trouble getting fixed up so we set the camera up on a rock and sat down on the railroad tracks. After the picture, I knelt down and asked her to marry me. It took a second for her to realize that I was indeed serious and luckily she said yes! We are now happily engaged and looking to have a wedding some time next year at the end of August.

Since I have a wedding and honey moon in Costa Rica to plan for, I’m going to have to ask everyone to go fishing with me as many times as possible before then so I’ll be able to afford it :) My weekends are starting to fill up for the fall so book now to reserve your weekend trip. You can book online at www.stripersinc.com or you can call me anytime at (903)815-1609 and I’ll get you set up.
